About

I’m Chris McLeod, and I’m a developer living in Scotland. I work for an international IT Services company, with my main experience and current role being in the Oil & Gas sector. For now, most of my day is spent working on an HSE/Safety compliance tool for a major operator using ASP.NET (C#) and Oracle.

In addition to using C#/.NET at work, I also code PHP and JavaScript, to varying degrees, and a very little amount of Ruby. I’d never claim to be a rockstar/expert, but I can generally get stuff done. I’m hoping to learn Clojure, Haskell and Python next (not necessarily in that order). I’ve got a reasonable amount of experience in infrastructure, servers, and desktops, picked up through my own experiments and previous employment. I’m fairly platform neutral, having used Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, and WebOS over the years.

Outside of work I have a passion for gadgets, technology, and geek culture (which hopefully this blog reflects!). One day I’d like to write at least one of the several books I have buzzing around my head. I’m a fairly avid reader, when I can find the time. If a book hooks me then I’ve often found myself trying to finish it in one sitting – quite often I do! I’m a fan of tabletop wargames and miniatures, particularly Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop (I have started to look at other games such as Warmachine by Privateer Press, as a means to branch-out). It’s a hobby I had as a teenager, put aside for several years, and took back up in 2012. I mostly stick to the modelling and painting side of the hobby, as I find it relaxing and rewarding to work on something creative away from a computer.

Milestones:

Arrived in this world on Valentines Day in 1983. 1999 was the year I started University, from which I graduated in 2002. In 2003, my son was born. In 2005 I suffered a brain haemorrhage that left me partially paralysed for a while, but I still walked down the aisle a few months later. In 2010 my twin daughters were born.
