Google Image Hotlinking

Looking through my referrer logs recently, I have seen an alarming number of refers from Google Image Search to one particular page on my site. Each time, the search query shown in the referrer URL is the same – pointing to the same image, specifying a height and width, and also a load of junk that I’m sure Google understands but I don’t. There does seem to be a rotation of which local version of Google Image Search is used – everything from .com to .fr. If I follow the link, I invariably get a “Page Not Found” error.

So my question is this: is this some nefarious method of image hotlinking? Spamming? Or is it the googlebot going mad? Is it time to add another rule to by referrer block list?
